Considered one of the most precious gemstones, the Ruby has been discussed in the Bible as well as in ancient Sanskrit writings. Rubies have been called the most prized possession for families of power throughout the times and have been used in the crown jewels for centuries. Rubies are also believed to bring good fortune to those who own them, even though one must already have good fortune to obtain them. They are fairly pricey and highly desirable. Rubies today are more highly priced then the top clarity, colorless diamonds on the market.

Rubies are mined all throughout Southeastern Asia, while the most beautiful Rubies come from Thailand and Burma, which is now known as Myanmar. Ruby, coming from the term "Ratnaraj," is Singhalese and means the "King of Gems." While varying in color, from red hues to purple and blues, Rubies are most commonly known for their deep red. Easily attainable in sizes up to 2 carats, fine and clear Rubies are exceptionally rare. Merchants have tried using technology to enhance the color but to no avail.

There are methods today however, that can artificially color Rubies that are paler in color by adding Beryllium. This also lowers the value and price of the Ruby itself. The Ruby is the birthstone for the month of July, but some older sources state it is for the month of December. It is also associated with the astrological sign Capricorn.

The color of the Ruby is what makes it most desirable first and then secondly, the clarity. Inclusions do not impair the quality unless they greatly reduce the transparency of the stone. It has been said that only the perfect cut will benefit this king of all gemstones natural beauty and brilliance. It is also said that a perfect true ruby, is as difficult to find as perfect and true love.
