Known for its vibrant orange color, the mandarin garnet is quite rare and actually comes in variety of colors anywhere from a yellow/orange, to red/orange, and even more of an orange/red. Although this gemstone first appeared within the trade not too long ago in 1991, the mandarin garnet happens to be one of the most brilliant stones when it comes to colored gems found throughout the world because of its extremely high refractive index.

Just as with many other gemstones, both the value and price will depend upon the quality and size of the mandarin garnet, while clarity and color also play a role. The most vivid of oranges is defined as the most valuable, and the cleaner and larger, the better.

Not only does its radiance of orange make this gem so extraordinary, but such a color supposedly indicates confidence, as well as readiness in taking on new risks. One who wears such a color is not afraid to bring such attention, as the color is unmistakable. Going beyond the display of an extrovert, the mandarin garnet also plays a significant role in art, as the color also resembles the process of all living things.

While this gemstone is more of a rare type, recently it has been found in Mozambique and Nambia mines, making it a bit more common. It can also be found in places such as Brazil, Kenya, China, Pakistan, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, the United States and Tanzania. In regards to hardness and the Mohs scale, this gem is ranked at a 7.5 making it very good in terms of durability.

Garnet is associated with the birthstone of those in January and according to the Zodiac chart, it is the Aquarius stone. In ancient times, it was believed that this gem had powers to heal and was actually used by medicine men and healers.
