Rubellite belongs to the Tourmaline family. It name is derived from the Latin word "Rebellus," which means reddish. Rubellite varies in color, ranging from very bright pinks, reddish purples, as well as ruby red. It is also a form of Elbaite (which encompasses the most rich and valuable hues) which like the Tourmalines, comes in a wide variation of colors.

The crystals within are prismatic and also hexagonal, which can expand up to about 3 feet in length. The largest crystals of Rubellite have been found in Brazil and have reached several million dollars in worth because of their length. It's easily identifiable because of its cross section, which is distended and triangular. These crystals can either be transparent, or opaque, as well and can be given a charge through electricity.

Sometimes these stones are treated to intensify its ruby coloration and most of the time clarity is great. There are times that fillers are added to enhance the clarity, however. Rubellites hardness comes between 7 and 7.5 on the Mohs scale and is used in many different forms of jewelry.

Tourmalines are found all over the world in places such as Afghanistan, Namibia, Pakistan, Madagascar, Mozambique, Siberia, Africa, Sri Lanka, North America, Brazil and Myanmar. Rubellites are most coveted for their brilliant color and also the fact that they are believed to destroy sorrow and eradicate negativity. It is believed that Rubellite may also improve concentration and soothe the nerves, while removing imbalance amongst relationships.

Medically speaking, the value of the Rubellite is believed to reduce infectious ailments, blood poisoning and also relieves some cases of anemia. It may also calm ones nerves and anxieties as well as put some ease on heart issues. Depending on one's beliefs, Rubellite is said to represent the zodiac sign Libra and also the planets Neptune, Venus, Mars and the Sun.
